ABOUT US

The idea of ​​spinPLACE was created at the University of Silesia out of a dream of comprehensive support for entrepreneurship, ingenuity and activities of research workers, students, PhD students and residents of the region, and out of a wish to create a place where, in a friendly environment, you can freely develop your own ideas and passions, learn cooperation and design, as well as look for inspiration and solutions. And all this in constant contact with representatives of business, local government and the service sector. We aim to achieve it through the ongoing activities of units, projects and initiatives located at spinPLACE: Silesia Design School, Spin Business Accelerator, Start-ups Mill, 3D Prototyping Centre, R&D Fuse, Science Cafe.

INDUSTRY COOPERATION OFFICE

Industry Cooperation Office is responsible for animating cooperation between the scientific community and business, promoting the University in the socio-economic environment and strengthening the competences of the academic community in regards to entrepreneurship and commercialisation of knowledge. Industry Cooperation Office acts as an equivalent of a knowledge and technology transfer centre, animates R&D projects and networks the University in national and international consortiums focused on entrepreneurship and technology transfer.

CAREER OFFICE

Career Office focuses on students and graduates of the University of Silesia in the labour market. The aim of the Career Office is to broadly support the development of their professional career – these tasks are carried out both through individual forms of support, i.e. career counselling (which also includes consultations of application documents and trial interviews) and career coaching, as well as through group support including a wide range of trainings and workshops developing interpersonal and professional skills.
Employers, on the other hand, can become known to students and graduates by engaging in various forms of cooperation with the Career Office, including: exhibiting promotional stands at individual faculties of the University of Silesia, participating in career fairs or organising information and recruitment meetings for our students and graduates. Career Office also helps search for qualified staff by enabling the use of a free website with job offers, apprenticeships and internships at www.biurokarier.edu.pl.

 OFFICE OF PATENT ATTORNEYS

Office of Patent Attorneys provides comprehensive support for the University’s intellectual and industrial property protection process, which includes qualifying industrial property items for protection, preparing full application documentation to the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland and in international procedures, in addition to maintaining the protection in force.
SPIN-US SP. Z O.O. – SPECIAL PURPOSE VEHICLE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SILESIA
SPIN-US Sp. z o. o. was established in 2014 to commercialise the results of scientific research, development work and technologies developed at the University of Silesia in Katowice by initiating cooperation between science, business and local government.

Initiatives

Science Café

An arena for numerous lectures, presentations, shows, exhibitions, screenings, meetings with authors, as well as motivational meetings and much more. The Science Cafe space is to be diverse in terms of the selection of topics, speakers and presenters, and over time will transform into the most interesting forum for exchanging ideas on entrepreneurship, innovation, important issues and social challenges.

3D prototyping Centre

The technological base of spinPLACE. It is a platform combining the technological foundation, engineering experience and creativity enabling the generation of solutions in the most dynamically developing technological areas and a place where prototypes can be created.  As part of the centre’s activities, a prototyping academy is planned, including a series of thematic training courses on additive printing processes at basic and advanced levels.

Initiatives

R&D Fuse

Freedom to organise meetings and work together on group tasks, design problems, concepts and current issues, addressed mainly to student research groups and informal interest groups. The work will be carried out in an unrestrained and undirected manner or under the supervision or consultation with trainers and instructors present on site.

As part of the initiative, regular workshops will be organised in: business modelling, Service Design – Designing Public Services, Design Thinking – Product Design and the valuation of intellectual and legal property for technology transfer purposes.

SILESIA DESIGN SCHOOL

This spinPLACE pillar is dedicated to the theory and practice of designing services, products and social initiatives, taking into account the needs of the end user or a group of users and citizens, the so-called design thinking.

Silesia Design School includes support for cooperation between scientific units and entrepreneurs regarding innovation and technology transfer and in regards to developing specific implementation effects. The implementation of these goals will take place through a bank of social challenges and regular meetings in the science to business formula.

Start-ups Mill

Support for newly established businesses or initiatives just before the legal formalisation of business activity, and care for them in the initial period of operation. It includes marketing, commercial, legal, technical design support, etc., as well as the involvement of mentors, business experts, business angels and investors involved in the development of the best start-ups in exchange for rights to shares.

Start-ups Mill is primarily thematic meetings in a hybrid formula – Mentor Club, aimed at increasing the level of knowledge regarding entrepreneurship and the intellectual property protection process.

Spin Business Accelerator

A set of activities dedicated to the creation and support of projects aimed at developing and introducing innovative products, services and technologies to the market, as well as connecting demand and supply between the business and science sectors in such a way that the research carried out responds to the current and real challenges of entrepreneurs.

Accelerator participants can count on access to a diverse cadre of scientific, local government and economic experts, as well as the latest modern equipment necessary to carry out the work.

The initiative includes: A school of entrepreneurship and design as well as a consulting point for academic entrepreneurship, aimed at creating a friendly environment for the first contact in the science-business sphere, improving competences, giving the opportunity to create the first portfolio of designed solutions for a real company.

spinPLACE is a space available to the entire academic community and its environment to support cooperation and innovation for the University of Silesia, as well as the Academic Consortium – Katowice City of Science. SpinPLACE enables the use of, among others, networking and conference spaces, as well as meeting places for organising various types of events and initiatives. ABOUT THE PROJECT

The headquarters of spinPLACE is the former building of the National Bank of Poland on ul. Bankowa 5 in Katowice. The reconstruction and renovation of the building’s rooms and its external façade, including adaptation to the needs of people with disabilities, was carried out as part of the ‘spinPLACE – Creativity and Co-working Centre’ project. The implementation of the project will contribute to achieving the goals included in the Regional Innovation Strategy of the Silesian Voivodeship for 2013–2020, among others, by stimulating the sustainable development of the region and promoting activities based on design thinking and undertaken by: students, graduates, research workers, as well as entrepreneurs and representatives of local government units.

The project is co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund under the Regional Operational Programme of the Silesian Voivodeship for 2014-2020 Priority Axis I Modern Economy Measure 1.4 Support for the innovation ecosystem sub-measure: 1.4.2. Support for regional and local centres of creativity and innovation.
